TWO FUTA ALUMNI WIN CARRINGTON FELLOWSHIP

Two Alumni of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Babajide Milton Macaulay and Olamide Adeyeye have been picked to participate in the 2021 edition of the Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative. The Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative, CYFI, is a dynamic youth-based initiative launched in 2011 by the U.S. Consulate General, Lagos. CYFI brings together Nigerian youth of exceptional vision, skills, and experience to design and implement projects that will have a positive impact on Nigerian society. The inspiration for CYFI, former Ambassador to Nigeria, Walter Carrington, was a champion of civil liberties, democracy, and closer ties between the U.S. and Nigeria. CYFI fellows are committed to putting the ideals of Walter Carrington into practice.

Macaulay graduated from FUTA in 2010 with a B.Tech in Biology, First Class. He was the Best Graduating Student in Biology Department. He also bagged MSc (Greenwich), PhD (Manchester). He is currently a member of the academic Staff in Biology Department.

Olamide Adeyeye who currently works as Deputy Manager, Women in Management, Business and Public Service, graduated with a First Class degree in   Food Science and Technology in 2017.

According to the managers of the Fellowship, “The Carrington Fellowship is a very competitive program and more than 1000 applicants vied for the 2021 edition with 20 fellows getting the final nod. “This year's Carrington Fellows will be working in 5 teams, namely Education, Economic Empowerment, Health, Civil Liberties and Environment. These teams will be the direction of the project that they will design and implement as they continue to learn and interact with various organizations.”

The Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative (CYFI) seeks to develop a select group of young Nigerians into ethical and impactful leaders by connecting them with mentorship, networking, training and funding opportunities over the course of an intensive fellowship year. The CYFI fellowship is built around year-long social innovation projects that are designed by fellows and supported by the U.S. Consulate and private partners. Following successful completion of their projects, fellows remain involved with CYFI and the U.S. Consulate through the CYFI Alumni Program.

The Vice Chancellor Professor Joseph Fuwape has congratulated the two fellows expressing optimism that they will, in the tradition of excellence of FUTA, justify their selection and add significant value to the process.
